Music: A Part of Our Daily Lives

Whether we realize it or not, music is a huge part of our lives. How many times can you turn on the television without hearing music in the background? Or how about driving in your car? More times than not, you probably have the music on.

I love music. I am constantly looking for new music to listen to. But it wasn't too long ago where I was very stubborn and narrow minded about my music. I listened to a very small category of music, and if you didn't like it, I considered your taste in music bad. It wasn't until a friend of mine decided to share some of his music. I instantly fell in love with it. The ironic part was, I would make fun of him for the very same music I came to love.

I couldn't get enough of his music. I would constantly ask him for new artists and more music. I started asking my other friends what they listened to. Suddenly, I went from just a few hours of music on my play-list to several days.

I have days of music, and I am constantly listening to it. Are there positive effects to it? In a recent article I read, music makes you smarter, enhances your creativity, and reduces stress. Sounds like a whole lot of good to me. But what about the negative effects? Surely something this good must have some sort of draw back, but the only thing that could really be called negative, is the lyrics and messages artists try to convey.

So I'll make a proposal to all of you who don't listen to music that often. Try it out. Put on some tunes the next time you study, and see if you do better. Crank the stereo in your car a little bit more and see if that long drive to school seems shorter. If you really don't like music and enjoy the silence, go back to your old habits. I am just asking you to try it out.
